NO JOKING MATTER
Life’s no joking matter
Else why was I thrust
Screaming in here?
Life’s no joking matter
Else why was my first step
Full of falls and bruises
Life’s no joking matter
Else why sweat all night
To make the grade in school
Son, take life serious
Or else you are thrust
Screaming in here again
The circle to repeat again
WHICH ARE YOU?
The lynx and the skunk
May gambol the forest: despised
The lion and the elephant
May thump through in pride
Even as the snake slithers
And we in fright wither
catch a sunbeam of hopes
see in their natures
your chance to know
that they are mirrors
to man’s little natures
so which are you?
The lynx, lion, or snake?
CHILD OF OUR WARS
She stumbled in
two dark holes
in a blank face
her gaunt frame
one gasp of air
collapsed in a heap
She struggled in
Like a torn rag
on a skeletal self
clawed bony talons
grasped the door
one heaving breadth
one pleading sigh
from torn lips whispered
stop the war.
Her hair like
birds nest awry
feet splintered
by the gravel
on the blood hungry highway.
One step each
for our failure
to stop the hate
on the bullet ridden
streets
a child, who heard no cries
no love notes
But the thunder of our guns
Please stop the war
Only the silence of death roared a reply
